Howard's Blog

It is just a general blog about nothing specific in general. It may address life, sports, politics, travel and any other thing that comes to mind. It will be out there for fun and banter. Coming soon. The blogged trip to New Zealand and Australia.

Fat, Dumb, And Happy... Nuevo Laredo!!!!

The weekend got off to a good early start with lunch at one of my favorite restaurants in Atlanta. Nuevo Laredo Cantina is pure mexican goodness. To start off with, the salsa is absolutely amazing. It is nice and chunky with large amounts of onions, tomatoes, and cilantro with a nice little kick to it. Than to start out with an order of some of the best guacamole dip you can have. Delicioso.

Every single dish on the menu I have had is delicous. From the standard burritos, tacos, and enchilades on to shrimp tacos, lobster tacos, and fish tacos. Today, I ordered one of my favorites. Tacos de Carne Asada with a side of barbacoa sauce. It is my alternative to the fantastic brisket barbacoa or fajitas barbacoa. Simply because they are just too much food. You will never leave this place hungry. The portions are huge. That is if you don't fill up on the chips, salsa and guacamole.

As you can see from the picture, Nuevo Laredo is not pulling people in because of it's posh decor. It is a very modest looking house with all kinds of character and great food and service. And some great margarita's that will pack a nice punch. The place is always packed and standard waiting time for a lunch is 30-45 minutes (unless you know people.) Even Dan Reeves waited patiently while he was coach of the Falcons. The place is always crowded, no matter when you go. It is worth the wait. Hands down the best Mexican food in Atlanta. Only place I have been that is equally as good was in San Diego, Casa De Bandini.

Warning. Please make sure you don't have a packed day after your dining experience there. You will no doubt be extremely full and enter into food coma. But I guarantee you will leave satisfied.

Oh my god, this made me so hungry for good Mexican food. My mouth is watering.

There is no good Mexican food in Sydney, none. It's either bland Tex-Mex crap or overpriced Mexican "fusion" food. Think kangaroo enchiladas with anchiote sauce and goat's cheese. (No, I'm not kidding.) I've tried pretty much every "Mexican" place here and have given up. I miss El Farolito's in San Francisco (24th and Mission) where $4 bought you a delicious buritto as big as your head.

Howard, if I ever make it to Atlanta this is the first place you're taking me. Followed by somewhere for "Jewish food" of course.

    ;)

Barbacoa is a spicy mexican barbecue sauce. Pour it over the carne asada followed by some guacamole and you have heaven in a tortilla.

When are you organizing a trip to Nuevo Laredo for those of us that haven't been?

I promise to eat Deb's share for her.
